The Woman Behind the Women’s Anthem of 2017, “Quiet”: MILCK Takes On Artbound

“What we grow up with we kind of store within us, and becoming a woman, it’s making choices on what I want to bring forward, what I know, and what new things I want to learn about, to become that fullest version of me.”

The singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and poet known as MILCK took ARTBOUND STUDIO A’s stage last night. This performance was quite unlike the rest. MILCK took the stage alone creating all her own sounds using a piano, her voice and a loop station. It allowed her lyrics to be the focus of her performances to effectively get her message and beliefs across to the audience. MILCK is a very complex and endowed musician. Started playing piano when she was 6 and had written her first piano composition by the age of 7. MILCK is also a trained classical opera singer; she trained piano and singing separately. It wasn’t until she fused both of her passions together that she was able to express herself in all new ways. As a result, MILCK started creating numerous pop songs without even realizing it.

MILCK is proactive in environmental justice as well as social justice. She has been a vegetarian for 7 years because of the environmental impact that the meat industry has. She wrote a song called “This Is Not the End” because she was “feeling a lot of guilt not being able to have zero footprint, it’s like I’m human, I’m going to have a footprint… I’m trying to console myself, like it doesn’t have to be the end, things can be reversed, we can make better decisions, we can have a better type of future.” When it comes to social justice, MILCK has become a name talked about by women all over the country. During the Women’s March in 2017, MILCK’s song “Quiet” went viral and become The Women’s Anthem of this year.  MILCK flew to D.C. for the Women’s March and described the experience as “absolutely electric, the air was filled with this high, vibrating energy.” She sang “Quiet” with 25 women she had never met before. There was planning and rehearsing ahead of time via phone and computer but the group did not meet until that morning.  MILCK thought she was crazy for spending so much money to go sing in D.C. with complete strangers but said the experience was beautiful. “Quiet” went viral receiving praise from all over the world and the music video on YouTube currently has 828,299 views.

You must go out and stand up for what you believe in if you want to bring attention to certain issues you are passionate about; MILCK did that. Either through songs or actively going out to promote the issue, artists must find ways to use their platform and the talent they were born with to be part of the change.  MILCK is just at the beginning of making a global change through her music, leaving us eagerly waiting to see what she does next.
